If not, then I suppose I can purchase an external sound device. I guess I'd like to know if HP ever intends to deliver drivers or not. The driver installs and the interface'works' however there is no sound. So you're telling me that the audio will NEVER work? Interestingly, RealTek makes a 64bit driver for the same (or similar) AC`97 chipset. The idea of shipping 64 bit operating system is due to stoppage of 32 bit processor by AMD. But some of the motherboard components will not support the XP64 bit operating system. Your model of presario ships with XP 64 bit processor.

To install the XP64 bit operating system, both the processor and motherboard components should support it. Seems strange that Compaq/HP would sell a 64bit machine but offer no drivers to support it.
